SEBI is exploring an India-specific AI model for securities markets, with the aim of using it for market surveillance, risk assessment and regulatory oversight. The idea is to build a system that understands India’s financial ecosystem and operates under domestic governance.

There is a strong case for developing AI systems around local markets. Financial regulations, trading patterns, investor behaviour and market data vary across countries. A model built specifically for India’s securities ecosystem could help regulators work with more relevant context and spot risks more effectively.

But building the model is only one part of the job. Its usefulness will depend on the quality of data it can access, how reliably it interprets market activity and how much regulators can trust its decisions.
