## This week in AI

### 1 . Is the AI infrastructure boom becoming a debt-fuelled race?

Broadcom is reportedly in talks to raise more than $60 billion in debt for an AI chip financing deal that could eventually reach $100 billion.

### 2 . Is AI's biggest bottleneck actually the chips?

Micron CEO Sanjay Mehrotra says the AI boom depends heavily on memory and semiconductor infrastructure, with the company investing $10 billion in a new research facility.

### 3 . Can AI make cancer diagnosis more reliable?

Researchers at Hong Kong Polytechnic University have developed TRUECAM, an AI framework designed to make cancer pathology diagnosis more reliable.

## Our take

### The AI Infrastructure Bill Is Getting Bigger

Broadcom is reportedly looking to raise more than $60 billion in debt for an AI chip financing deal that could eventually reach $100 billion, with Anthropic and other companies among those benefiting from the financing.

The scale of the deal shows what sits behind the AI boom we see on the surface. Every new model, agent, and AI product needs enormous amounts of computing power underneath it. And securing that capacity is becoming a business in itself, with chipmakers, data-centre operators, cloud companies, and AI labs all taking bigger roles in financing the build-out.

The interesting question now is how much of this spending will translate into real AI usage and returns.

## AI product & startup updates

Wispr Flow hits $2B valuation

The AI voice-to-text startup raised $280 million in Series B funding and launched its own speech model, Canto.

* AI video startup **Higgsfield** reached a **$5.4 billion** valuation, four times its value six months ago, as demand for AI-generated marketing and media content grows.
* AI chip startup **Etched** raised **$700 million**, more than doubling its valuation to **$21 billion** in under a month, as demand for specialised **AI inference chips** grows.
* AI chip-design startup **Velaura AI** raised **$110 million**, pushing its valuation above **$1 billion** as it works on reducing power consumption in AI data centres.
* **Ant International** launched an upgraded AI model for foreign-exchange management, with **Citi**, **HSBC** and **Standard Chartered** among the banks adopting the tool.

## Footnotes

Broadcom is looking to borrow billions to build more AI infrastructure.

At this rate, the AI revolution is going to need a mortgage.
