### The AI Boom Is Facing Its First Big Reality Check

Chip stocks have been among the biggest beneficiaries of the AI boom, fuelled by massive spending on GPUs, data centres and computing infrastructure. But as valuations climb, investors are starting to question how much of that investment will translate into sustainable returns.

The economics of AI are becoming harder to ignore. Building and running these systems costs billions, and continued spending depends on businesses finding enough real-world applications to justify the bill. Strong demand for chips today doesn't automatically guarantee equally strong returns tomorrow.

For AI companies, the pressure will increasingly be to demonstrate what their technology delivers beyond impressive benchmarks and launch announcements.

*   **Labelbox raised over $100 million in Series E funding**, at a $1.25 billion pre-money valuation.
*   **Character.AI filed for bankruptcy**, just five years after its launch, as the chatbot platform faces mounting legal challenges and questions about its long-term sustainability.
